The Energy Recovery Council wrote to Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman and ranking member Lisa Murskowski today to offer its support for an amendment filed by Senator Ron Wyden to include waste-to-energy as a renewable resource in the renewable energy standard (RES). The Energy and Natural Resources Committee is scheduled to mark up the RES on June 4 and Wyden's amendment would ensure that waste-to-energy receives proper recognition as a renewable energy source, consistent with other federal and state laws.
In urging the Committee to adopt Wyden's amendment, ERC
President Ted Michaels said, "Recognizing that the combustion of municipal solid waste produces clean, renewable energy is an important component of America’s renewable policy." He further added that, "Adoption of Senator Wyden’s amendment will promote energy independence, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support the communities that rely on this important technology."
